“Pale”: A Dark and Mysterious Skate Edit from Tokyo

This skateboarding edit, “Pale,” sent to us by Kenta Okamoto, perfectly balances style and substance, a rare combination in many skate videos today. This edit stands out with its unique and visually pleasing spots, capturing an intensity and mystique not often seen in American skateboarding. Kenta, who has been consistently putting out edits on his YouTube channel, has truly outdone himself with “Pale”.

The music choice is a significant highlight of the video. Any video editor knows how challenging it can be to find the perfect track to complement the visuals, but Kenta has nailed it. The music provides an introspective feel to the edit, a direction not often explored by other editors. Forget the typical hard-thrashing, beer-and-weed-fueled garage punk; this edit takes a different, more artistic approach.

For those curious to learn more about Kenta and his other projects, check out the interview by Live Skateboard Media here. The interview delves into his creative process and provides additional insights into his unique perspective on skateboarding.

The unique spots featured in the “Pale” video are a major draw, offering a fresh perspective on urban skateboarding. The skater navigates these spaces with a smooth, almost ethereal style that perfectly complements the overall dark, introspective vibe of the video. The cinematography and editing enhance this effect, creating a viewing experience that’s both visually captivating and emotionally engaging.

The “Pale” edit isn’t just about showcasing skateboarding tricks; it’s about creating an atmosphere and telling a story through visuals and music. It is a reminder that skateboarding can be an art form, a means of self-expression, and a way to connect with one’s environment in a unique and personal way. This video provides a welcome change from the usual skateboarding edit. Kenta Okamoto’s work on “Pale” has produced a compelling and artistic skateboarding experience that should be shared widely with those who appreciate the art of skate videography.

Heavy sub-zero vibes. Like watching an unreleased eastern exposure video from 96. Congrats to the crew. Far eastern exposure #1?!

It’s nice and captures the vibe of street skating in Japan well, but as well as the wobbly zoom-in after trick Strobeck style, and the rough-spot Eastern Exposure style, the audio and visual style of this are most heavily influenced bi Takahiro Morita / FESN – compare the music and edit from 3:45 onwards to this (Overground Broadcasting, 2011) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlDo2i_tXIg
