The restaurant business is notoriously challenging, with high initial costs, constant maintenance demands, and the ever-present risk of dissatisfied customers. So, it might come as a surprise that professional skateboarder Tyshawn Jones, known for his hustle and talent on the board, decided to open his own restaurant. Taste So Good (Make You Wanna Smack Your Mama), a Caribbean-American eatery, has opened its doors in the Soundview neighborhood of The Bronx, where Tyshawn grew up, offering a diverse menu of flavorful dishes.
Located at 1752 Lafayette Ave, near the St. Lawrence Ave. 6 train station, Taste So Good is quickly becoming a local favorite. Upon visiting on opening day, we were immediately impressed by the extensive menu, which caters to various tastes. The restaurant was bustling, so much so that they had run out of printed menus, forcing employees to tape a few up on the walls for customers to place their orders. This buzz speaks volumes about the restaurant’s initial success and appeal.

Taste So Good exudes the familiar charm of a classic New York City take-out spot, but with a distinct Caribbean-American twist. Rather than the typical Chinese fare, you’ll find a delectable array of options, including spicy jerk chicken, collard greens, oxtail, peas and rice, mac ‘n cheese, and other Caribbean-inspired dishes. The restaurant features bench seating along the street-facing windows, allowing you to people-watch while enjoying your meal or take a look at the kitchen to see the various dishes being prepared.
A medium plate, which includes one entree and two sides for $12, makes a hearty lunch or dinner. With around two dozen dishes to choose from, there’s plenty to try and explore. For a more budget-friendly option, the $7.50 lunch specials are a satisfying pick. If you’re in the mood for something a bit more indulgent, the fried chicken and waffle combos, featuring regular or red velvet waffles, are a must-try.

Even professional skateboarder and filmmaker Bill Strobeck stopped by to congratulate Tyshawn and was treated to a custom-made vegan dish by the chef, demonstrating the restaurant’s ability to cater to various dietary preferences.
Taste So Good is more than just a restaurant, it’s a community hub where good food and good vibes meet. If you find yourself in the Bronx, be sure to visit Taste So Good and experience the unique culinary creations for yourself, just remember not to smack your mom!
