Skating the Most Expensive Mini Ramp in Manhattan

A few months ago, we received an unexpected email from a reader named Josh. He began by referencing our YouTube content before transitioning into an invitation to skate a private mini ramp located in the basement of his apartment building within Manhattan’s high-end Waterline Square neighborhood.

Josh was well aware of the absurdity of his offer—a scrappy video team from an independent skate magazine filming at a private skatepark within a building where monthly rents start at $6,000. His self-awareness convinced us that, at the very least, accepting wouldn’t mean spending a day with an out-of-touch rich snob.

Luckily, our instincts were correct. While Josh did showcase the numerous amenities of his building, it came across more as a “I’m moving out in a few weeks, so why not?” attitude rather than a boastful one. To maximize the experience, we invited Staten Island’s very own Leo Heinert to perform some tricks and push the ramp beyond basic rock and rolls and axle stalls.

The mini ramp, a rare find in the heart of Manhattan, presented a unique opportunity for skateboarding. The smooth transitions and clean surface provided a fantastic canvas for both basic and advanced tricks. It’s not everyday that you get to skate a private ramp in such a luxurious setting.

The juxtaposition of the raw, urban nature of skateboarding with the polished, high-end environment of the apartment building created a surreal experience. It was a reminder that skateboarding can thrive in any setting, from the grittiest streets to the most exclusive residences.

Leo’s skateboarding skills truly showcased the ramp’s potential. His dynamic tricks added a layer of excitement and skill to the session, proving that even a small, private ramp can be the site of impressive skateboarding. This session captured the essence of skateboarding: pushing limits, having fun, and finding creativity in unexpected places.

The filming process, led by Alexis Castro and Greg Navarro, captured the raw energy of the session. The video is not just about the tricks performed, but also about the experience of skating in a space that is so far removed from the typical skate spot. It’s a fascinating look at how skateboarding can bridge social and economic divides.

This whole experience is a testament to the fact that skateboarding is a powerful force that can bring people together, regardless of their backgrounds or where they find themselves skating. The mini ramp in Manhattan was a reminder that the spirit of skateboarding remains alive and well, even in the most unexpected places.

The video footage is a must-watch for anyone interested in skateboarding, urban exploration, or just a unique story about how a private mini ramp in a luxury building became a skate haven.
