If you were actively involved in the skateboarding scene in the early 2010s, you likely remember Ripped Laces. This independent website, founded by Jeremy Lugo, was a dedicated hub for skate shoe enthusiasts, delivering in-depth news and reviews of skate footwear. Now, Ripped Laces is making a comeback, and we’re kicking things off with an insightful interview with the renowned designer, Benny Gold.
Jeremy Lugo, a close friend and a valuable sounding board for ideas, has collaborated with us on various special projects, most notably our Converse collaboration shoe in 2019. We’ve noticed a recurring sentiment online – many lament the absence of Rippedlaces.com and express hope for its return. This prompted us to encourage Jeremy to revive the site and once again start producing content. This article is the first step in a trial run of Ripped content on Jenkem, with the aim of bringing you semi-regular updates going forward.
For his first project back, Jeremy, along with filmer Bobby Spero, connected with designer Benny Gold to discuss his extensive career and past designs. Benny Gold, known throughout streetwear for his namesake brand, is a highly accomplished designer, art director, and entrepreneur. He’s also a skateboarder who’s contributed his expertise to legacy brands like Ipath, Gravis, and HUF, among others. We caught up with Benny on the verge of his raffle, where he was giving away his life’s work, offering us the opportunity to delve into his perspectives on the current state of footwear and some of his most memorable projects. It’s important to note that this interview was conducted before the passing of Keith Hufnagel, may he rest in peace.
