A Look Back at the Year in Skateboarding: Philly, NYC, and Beyond

As the year winds down, it’s time for a final look back at some of the moments that defined the skateboarding scene. This recap isn’t about perfect tricks or flawless lines, but about the people, places, and energy that make skateboarding so unique. From premieres in Philly to chance encounters in NYC and even advertising talks in L.A., here’s a glimpse into the diverse world of skateboarding.

Our journey starts with a visit to Philadelphia for the Sabotage x DC premiere. The event showcased the work of Brian Panebianco, a master lensman, whose skateboarding clip featuring a varial heel at Muni, shot with a VX-1000, was a major highlight. The energy in Philly was a welcome change from the often dramatic and cool atmosphere of New York City. Jahmir Brown, pictured with a drink, hosted the evening, introducing the edit and the LOVE documentary. It raises the question: has the footage of people discussing LOVE Park finally surpassed the actual skating footage at LOVE Park? Possibly, but that’s perfectly fine.

Following the premiere, Kris Brown kept the good times rolling, offering cookies despite the rain. What started as a premiere celebration evolved into a night of casino gambling, cheesesteaks, and sleeping on a bare wooden floor—a reminder that it’s okay to embrace the spontaneous and slightly delinquent side of life.

We also stopped by Zach Harris’s house, a familiar face within the Jenkem community. Formerly known as Acid Boy, Zach has traded the hustle of NYC for a more laid-back life in South Philly. His transition prompts a reflection on different paths and the various forms of success.

Moving on from the East Coast’s unpredictable weather, we remember the summer’s heat and humidity, and the simple joy of a fan on a hot day. The thought of enduring winter’s cold makes you appreciate those sweltering days.

In NYC, we connected with two influential figures: Ron Hunter and Vinny Raffa. Ron, Harold Hunter’s brother, is dedicated to helping underserved youth through the Harold Hunter Foundation. Vinny, though appearing a bit rough these days, holds a special place in skateboarding history as the first to organize a contest at the Brooklyn Banks back in 1993. He’s also known for spreading his stickers all over the NY area for 30 years.

Then there’s Jiro, a skater who stands out for his clean lifestyle. He neither drinks nor smokes, and he certainly doesn’t engage in posting edgy memes. It’s remarkable to think that he was essentially the last rider on 917. Life, indeed, is full of surprises.

A notable highlight of the year is the return of Date a Skater, a show that promises, or at least hints, at romance. While there are no guarantees of finding love, the show will certainly provide entertainment. As Morpheus put it, “I can only show you the door. You’re the one that has to walk through it.”

In Los Angeles, conversations shifted to advertising, with a meeting with Steven, the Lakai TM/Marketing guy. While the details are still being worked out, the possibility of Lakai banners on the site in the future would signify a successful collaboration.

John Gardner stands out as a character who possesses not only the last working iPod Shuffle but also the unusual talent of using music to educate young riders on the importance of paying taxes.

Finally, there’s a discussion about the shifting landscape of photography. The rising costs of film cameras and development are prompting many to consider a move back to digital. While the human quality of film is appreciated, the practicalities of cost versus sharing on platforms like Instagram is a valid consideration.

This year’s recap shows the vibrant and diverse world of skateboarding, filled with passionate individuals, memorable events, and thought-provoking questions. From premieres and parties to meetings and everyday moments, it’s a reminder of what makes this community so special. As we wrap up, we’re excited for what the next year holds.
