Welcome to the latest installment of our series, PARTS, where we delve into the core of skateboarding: video parts. We’re not here to debate the merits of focusing on video parts, but rather to explore the personal connections skaters have with them. We get skaters to share the video parts they love, hate, wish they’d made, or could watch endlessly. It’s the kind of talk you’d hear at the skatepark or a street spot.
This time, we caught up with Lucas Puig, the incredibly smooth skateboarding export from France. We wanted to know what he watches when he’s not surfing, spending time with family, or perhaps doing some synchronized skating with planes.
Lucas Puig’s Top Video Part Picks
What is the first video part you remember watching?
Lucas recalls being captivated by 411VM – “Best of… #4”. This early exposure to skateboarding videos clearly left a lasting impression.
What’s the first skateboarding video you ever bought or downloaded?
For Lucas, that milestone was Transworld – The Reason. This video played a crucial role in shaping his skateboarding perspective.
If you could have used any song from a video part, which would you pick?
He wishes he had used “Sleepwalk” by Santo & Johnny, which was featured in Nick Trapasso’s part from Toy Machine – Suffer The Joy. The combination of the song and the skating clearly resonated with Lucas.
Which of your own video parts do you absolutely hate watching?
Lucas admits to not being fond of his old parts, including this one and this other one. Many skaters feel the same way about their earlier works, and it’s a sign of growth.
If you could only watch one video part for the rest of your life, which would it be?
This was a tough choice for Lucas, but he narrowed it down to either Mark Gonzales or Guy Mariano in Blind – Video Days. Both are iconic parts that stand the test of time.
What’s the best song/skater combination in a video part?
Lucas points to Wade Desarmo’s part in DGK – It’s Official. The synergy between the skater’s style and the soundtrack created a memorable experience.
What is the best skateboarding video part to come out of France?
According to Lucas, J.B. Gillet in Rodney Mullen vs. Daewon Song: Round 2 is the best example of French skateboarding.
What’s the worst video part to watch on a date?
Lucas playfully suggests that anything by Evan Mock would be a poor choice for date night viewing.
Lucas Puig’s selections provide insight into his influences and personal preferences in skateboarding. It’s a reminder that video parts are not just about tricks, but also the art, the music, and the overall impact they have on the culture. His choices highlight the importance of style, innovation, and personal connection in skateboarding.
