The environments we grow up in profoundly shape us, influencing our speech, personalities, and even our dietary habits. This is especially true for skateboarders, who often become products of their surroundings more so than the average person. Skaters are naturally inclined to explore every nook and cranny of their communities, discovering spots and hidden gems that others might miss. Understanding a skater’s origins can reveal a lot about their early life and current self. This is why we decided to visit the old stomping grounds of various skaters, and see what those streets and spots can tell us.
In this episode, we journeyed to Helsinki, Finland, to meet up with the talented Finnish pro skater, Marius Syvanen. For our first exploration of Finland’s capital, Marius became our guide, showing us the iconic ledges that locals have skated, sharing interesting facts, like how “Finland has more saunas than cars,” and took us to a new spot he was eager to skate.

Uncovering New Skate Spots
Beyond the well-trodden paths, Marius introduces us to a new, “sketchy” spot. This is the type of location that is discovered through relentless exploration, a trait shared by many dedicated skaters. The excitement in his voice is infectious, reflecting the thrill of discovering new skating terrain. This spot emphasizes how skaters aren’t just riding; they are constantly seeking, adapting, and creating their own playgrounds. This new spot is a raw example of how skaters can transform ordinary urban environments into skateable landscapes.
