Moshpits, Burnouts & The Anderson Family at Rapid Fest

Hardcore music and skateboarding share a rebellious spirit. Both are often misunderstood by outsiders, annoy older generations, and leave participants feeling physically exhausted. It’s no surprise that many skateboarders are also drawn to the energy of hardcore. Understanding this connection, Rapid Skateshop, with the support of Cons, organized the second annual Rapid Fest, a gathering that perfectly blends these two worlds.

The event featured 24 hardcore bands, several local skate shops including Black Hole, and a variety of challenging ramps. The entire Anderson family, most notably skateboarding legends Mike and Jake, also attended, with Mike’s truck even serving as a key element of the skate setup. Loud music, burning rubber, and a humorous anecdote from Jake involving a sudden digestive upset — Rapid Fest had it all. And yes, that was Jesse Rutherford from The Neighbourhood, adding an unexpected layer of pop-culture intrigue. It was a unique blend of chaos and fun set against the backdrop of the California hills.

The event’s atmosphere was a potent mix of high-octane skateboarding and intense hardcore music. It was a space where the energy was palpable and the passion for both scenes was evident. Attendees were treated to a spectacle that went beyond the usual skate event, offering a unique experience that resonated with the core values of both skateboarding and hardcore punk. The decision to host the festival in the California hills added an element of raw authenticity, further cementing the event’s place as a unique gathering.

The skate ramps themselves were a focal point of the festival. They were designed to push skaters to their limits, which resulted in some incredibly thrilling moments. The ramps, while “sketchy” as described, were a perfect playground for the skaters, and they delivered an exciting display of skill and creativity. The ramps were not just obstacles; they were integral to the collaborative and energetic vibe of the event.

The Anderson family’s presence added another layer of significance to Rapid Fest. Mike and Jake Anderson, both highly respected figures in the skateboarding community, weren’t just attendees; they were active participants. Their engagement with the event highlighted the family’s deep-rooted connection to skateboarding culture, and Mike’s truck becoming a feature of the skate jam emphasized that spirit.

The combination of skateboarding and hardcore music created an atmosphere that was both exhilarating and inclusive. The event was not just for hardcore fans or avid skaters, but a convergence of like-minded individuals drawn to the raw energy and unfiltered expression both offer. The festival fostered a sense of community, where everyone could share their passion for skateboarding and music.

Beyond the high-energy performances and the challenging skate spots, Rapid Fest also offered an unexpected celebrity appearance. The presence of Jesse Rutherford, frontman of The Neighbourhood, added a layer of surrealism and highlighted the cultural cross-pollination inherent in such a gathering. It was a testament to the unique blend of different scenes that came together at the festival.

The second annual Rapid Fest was a clear success, showcasing the vibrant intersection of skateboarding and hardcore music. The event provided a space for both scenes to come together, creating an experience that was both thrilling and memorable. From the challenging ramps and the high-energy performances to the presence of skateboarding icons and a surprise celebrity appearance, it was a day that embodied the rebellious and creative spirit of both skateboarding and hardcore. Rapid Fest is quickly becoming a must-attend event, promising future editions that will continue to push the boundaries of skate and music culture.
