In 2016, the skateboarding world took notice of the Public Housing Skate Team (PHST) after their video “THUG” went viral. This wasn’t just another skate video; it was an experimental, raw, and strangely satirical mix of short film, skate clips, and kung-fu movie aesthetics. PHST cleverly blended stereotypical “hood moments” with tongue-in-cheek humor, like discovering bullets in their hardware stash. It was hard to tell where the comedy ended and reality began, leaving audiences intrigued and wanting more.
Intrigued, we ventured to the Bronx to meet the team at the Gun Hill Road projects. What we found was a group of determined and creative young people who had turned their unique experiences into a rising skate brand.
From the Projects to a Skate Brand
