This article delves into the rich history of Miami’s MLK Ledges, a skate spot that has witnessed countless tricks and stories. Instead of focusing solely on New York City, we’re venturing to the vibrant skate scene of Miami, Florida, to explore this iconic location.
For the fifth installment of our “Evolution of…” series, we sent our filmer and friend Richard Quintero back to his hometown of Miami to document the MLK Ledges. Similar to many great skate spots in urban areas, its location isn’t in the safest part of the city, and it has some minor imperfections. However, the MLK Ledges remain a significant spot due to its history and the skateable features it provides. Richard spoke with Forrest Kirby, Kenny Anderson, and Zered Bassett to compile an oral history of noteworthy tricks that have been landed there, along with anecdotes about encounters with locals.
The MLK Ledges may have lost some of its appeal among the younger generation of skaters, but we hope that sharing these stories will encourage new skaters to attempt innovative ledge combos and film their own sponsor-me videos, reminiscent of the golden age of skateboarding.
