The allure of skateboarders has reached its peak since Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boy” hit the airwaves, suggesting that skaters make desirable partners. Nowadays, just carrying a skateboard can turn heads and spark interest. It seems everyone is captivated by skateboarders, or at least the idea of them. This fascination led to the creation of “Date A Sk8er,” a unique blind dating show where skaters are paired with non-skaters to see if sparks fly beyond the skatepark.
This series explores the awkward yet intriguing dynamics between two worlds, as skaters and “normies” navigate the complexities of dating. Whether you’re a skater or not, you might see a bit of yourself in these contestants and feel inspired to pursue your own romantic connections.
In this episode, we introduce Lindsey, a Bushwick resident immersed in the menswear industry, and Black Dave, a Zoo York rider and rapper. We sent them off to explore the bars near Jenkem HQ, hoping to discover a match made in heaven or perhaps a date destined to fail. So, let’s see what happened.
The episode kicks off with Lindsey and Black Dave meeting for the first time. Lindsey, initially a bit reserved, seems intrigued by Black Dave’s laid-back and confident demeanor. Their conversation flows, touching upon their careers, hobbies, and of course, skateboarding. Black Dave shares stories about his skating and music, while Lindsey talks about her work in the fashion world, showcasing two very different but equally engaging personalities.
As the date progresses, the duo explores a couple of local bars. The conversation ranges from lighthearted banter to deeper discussions about their aspirations and views on life. Despite some initial awkwardness, a sense of comfort gradually develops between them. The chemistry is palpable, and they seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
However, the date isn’t without its hiccups. There are moments of miscommunication and differing perspectives. Lindsey, though seemingly open-minded, occasionally displays some skepticism about the skateboard culture, while Black Dave navigates her comments with humor. Despite these minor bumps, they manage to navigate these differences with grace and curiosity, adding a layer of authenticity to their interaction.
The episode concludes with Lindsey and Black Dave reflecting on their date. They both express that they had a good time and appreciated the opportunity to meet someone new. While the episode leaves their future connection uncertain, it’s clear that they formed a unique bond during their time together. It also raises the question: can a skater and a non-skater truly find common ground and form a lasting connection, or will their different backgrounds ultimately lead them down different paths? “Date A Sk8er” continues to explore these questions, making us laugh and contemplate the dynamics of modern dating.
This episode was brought to life by Alexis Castro and Ian Michna, who handled the filming; Ollie Rodgers and Alexis Castro, who took care of the editing; Brett Dalzell, who provided the animations; and Nic Nootens, who managed the talent.
