Cult Raptures Longboard Wheel Review: Speed, Durability, and Consistency

When selecting longboard wheels, performance factors like speed, grip, and longevity are paramount. I’m always looking for wheels that deliver on these key aspects without requiring constant replacements. In this review, I’ll delve into the Cult Raptures, a wheel that has gained popularity among European riders. These wheels certainly check many boxes, but they also come with a few considerations. This review focuses on their performance after the initial skin is worn off.

Cult Raptures: Specs and Features

Before diving into performance, let’s look at the core specifications of the Cult Raptures:

  • Diameter/Height: 74mm
  • Width/Thickness: 66mm
  • Contact Patch: 66mm
  • Urethane Options: 73a, 75a, 77a
  • Special Feature: Large core

Performance Review

Grip and Slide Dynamics

Initially, the Cult Raptures offer significant grip, but this changes once the outer skin wears off. They become noticeably more slippery, particularly when compared to other downhill wheels after their skin is gone. However, this isn’t necessarily a negative. The reduced grip makes them more versatile for various road conditions, giving riders a comfortable balance between slide and control. If you’re seeking maximum grip, the Abec 11 Reflex Bigzigs are a great alternative.

It’s worth noting that ambient temperature plays a crucial role in the wheel’s grip. In colder climates (10-18°C), the wheels provided excellent grip and stopping power. However, in warmer weather (19-24°C), they became more slippery and offered less resistance when slowing down. Thus, your local climate may influence your experience with these wheels.

Consistent Speed and Roll

The large core and dense urethane of the Cult Raptures contribute to a consistent roll speed throughout their lifespan. Unlike many wheels that lose performance as they wear down, these maintain a similar feel from 75mm to 65mm. This is great for riders who value consistency, whether you’re learning new tricks or refining your style. The large core also stiffens the wheel, meaning a 77a wheel with a big core can roll as fast as an 80a wheel with a smaller core.

Weight Considerations

The Cult Raptures are undeniably heavy. The combination of dense urethane and a large core make these some of the heaviest wheels available. The weight contributes to increased momentum and higher top speeds when going downhill, but it can also make pushing off the starting line and slowing down more challenging. Riders might find their leg muscles getting a good workout, though!

Durability and Longevity

These wheels are impressively durable. After riding them on and off for the equivalent of four months, they only wore down to 65mm. They ultimately became oval due to riding, but their durability is a significant advantage. Even when they become too small for downhill riding, they can still be used on a cruiser setup, making them a worthwhile investment.

Grip Tape and Slide Performance

If you purchase these wheels, it’s wise to pair them with some high-quality grip tape. While they offer decent grip, they are not on the extreme end of grippy downhill wheels. Initially, I struggled with sliding due to inadequate grip, but switching to Seismic Lokton grip made a world of difference. This upgrade made initiating slides easier, smoother, and more controlled. Previously, I felt like I was slipping off the board, but with better grip, the wheels slide beautifully.

Wheel Width and Board Setup

The Cult Raptures are wide, measuring 66mm in width. This offset means that the wheels will protrude from your deck if your setup doesn’t account for them using narrower trucks or a wider board. Overhanging wheels can make them harder to control and slide, and can prevent you from correctly distributing your weight over the core and urethane. If the wheel’s core aligns with the edges of your board, or they stick out slightly, you should be good.

You can flip the wheels to address this, though it’s not how they were designed to be ridden. While the wheels will still grip and ride normally, you may lose the feeling of traction right before you start sliding. This can be especially crucial in racing scenarios, where that sensation helps you scrub corners.

Final Thoughts

“No Fuss” Wheels

Overall, the Cult Raptures are “no fuss” wheels. Once they’re mounted, you can rely on their consistent grip, roll, and performance for months without needing to worry about them. This allows riders to focus on other aspects of their riding, like improving slide techniques or fine-tuning their trucks.

Recommendations

These wheels are excellent, but they might not be the right fit for every rider. If you’re new to downhill longboarding, you should consider other options as you’re likely to find these too challenging, and your ride won’t be as enjoyable. The Orangatang Kegels are more forgiving for beginners.

However, for intermediate to advanced riders who have experimented with a few downhill wheels, the Cult Raptures are a great choice to push their abilities.

Experienced riders looking for a dependable “no-fuss” wheel will also appreciate this wheel’s consistent and reliable performance. You can simply mount them and not have to think about replacing them for months.

In conclusion, the Cult Raptures are a premium option for experienced longboarders seeking a high-performance wheel that provides a great balance of speed, durability, and consistency.
