Abec 11 HD Big Zig Reflex Wheel Review: A Deep Dive for Advanced Riders

The Abec 11 HD Big Zig Reflex wheels have been a constant companion on my board for the past four months, and I can confidently say they’re among the best I’ve ever ridden. Before getting my hands on these, I’d heard conflicting opinions about their grip, slide characteristics, and chatter. Some raved about their speed, while others warned about their potentially uncontrollable nature. My experience has shown that these wheels live up to the hype, albeit with some nuances that become apparent as they wear. This review delves into my time with the Abec 11 HD Big Zig Reflex wheels, focusing on their performance after the initial skin wore off and how they feel during everyday riding.

Abec 11 HD Big Zig Reflex Wheel Specifications

Before diving into the ride experience, let’s look at the specs:

  • Diameter: 75mm
  • Width: 60mm
  • Contact Patch: 59mm
  • Distinctive thick, meaty lips

These wheels are available in two urethane options: Reflex and Classic. The Classic urethane is known for its smooth slides and thane lines, while the Reflex urethane, which I chose, is known for its superior grip and faster rolling speed.

Grip and Chatter: Separating Fact from Fiction

The rumors about the Abec 11 HD Big Zig Reflex wheels being overly grippy and chattery aren’t entirely unfounded. Initially, the urethane can feel like it wants to skip on the pavement, especially if you don’t have your weight properly over the wheels. This issue can be exacerbated if your wheels stick out too far from your board or if your trucks are too wide. If you’re not putting enough weight on your board with your feet flat, you will also face problems with these wheels sliding smoothly.

However, once you find that sweet spot and get your weight right during a slide, the wheels transform. They glide smoothly, almost like butter, offering an incredibly satisfying ride. They feel so good that it feels like you’re hugging the pavement.

These wheels also provide excellent grip and stopping power. Although narrower than my Cult Raptures, they offer better grip and slow me down more effectively. There might be an initial feeling that they might buck you off, but you will quickly learn to control them. As they wear down, they become easier to slide, which I found incredibly beneficial. Speed and Roll

Despite not having an overly large core, the dense Reflex urethane allows these wheels to roll exceptionally fast. When they were new, I was easily clocking speeds a kilometer or three faster compared to my other downhill wheels. This consistent speed lasted until they wore down past 64mm. Even at 64mm, they still roll faster and perform better than many other downhill wheels on the market.

Urethane Longevity

The longevity of these wheels has been impressive considering their narrow profile. After four months of regular riding, they haven’t reached their core and still have a substantial amount of urethane left. The fact that they continue to ride and slide well, even at their current size, is impressive. I’ve been able to ride them consistently without needing to worry about replacing them with new downhill wheels.

Value for Money

Considering their affordability, the Abec 11 HD Big Zig Reflex wheels offer incredible value. They are durable and perform exceptionally well, giving higher-end wheels a run for their money in everyday riding scenarios. The performance and longevity make these an amazing choice.

Not Recommended for Beginners

These wheels are not the best choice for beginner longboarders. The Reflex urethane can be challenging to handle, especially for those new to sliding. I would recommend the Classic thane version for beginners, as they are easier to control and more forgiving during slides. The initial experience with the Reflex version might be overwhelming, so consider starting with the classic thane version.

Grip is Key

Given how grippy these wheels are, having good traction on your board is crucial. If your board lacks sufficient grip, you’ll find these wheels difficult to handle and not enjoyable to ride. I recommend using a high-quality coarse grip such as Seismic Lokton or Mob coarse grip. Standard grip like Vicious, Blood Orange, or Gangster may not be sufficient to handle the power of these wheels.

Final Thoughts on the Abec 11 HD Big Zig Reflex Wheels

I highly recommend the Abec 11 HD Big Zig Reflex wheels to advanced riders and advanced beginners who are looking for a challenge. They are a blast to ride, and I plan on purchasing more sets in the future. While beginners may find them difficult to handle at first, their fast rolling capabilities make them a great option for cruising. These wheels are a fantastic addition to any advanced longboarder’s setup, delivering an amazing experience in speed, control, and overall enjoyment.
