Jenkem Explores Latvia with Longboarder Madars Apse

The Jenkem crew has embarked on numerous video projects over the years, but their recent journey to Latvia marks their most “off the beaten path” destination to date. Before this trip, the team admitted they couldn’t pinpoint Latvia on a map, and it wasn’t a place they had heard much about in the longboarding world.

However, they were well aware that Latvia is the homeland of the exceptional longboarder, Madars Apse. You might recognize Madars from his appearances in “King of the Road,” “Skate Tales,” or his various video parts for Element Skateboards. Madars is known for always having surprises up his sleeve; he’s fluent in four languages, pulls off incredible tricks, and has achieved significant skateboarding milestones despite hailing from a country with a population comparable to a small U.S. city (1.8 million).

Instead of simply creating another “Hanging Out With” video or a standard text interview, Jenkem decided to take a different approach. They asked Madars to guide them around Latvia during the summer. They spent a week filming Madars longboarding, meeting his family, and engaging with locals to learn about the region’s history. Madars’ story is one of drive, perseverance, and dedication, and this resonated deeply with the Jenkem crew, elevating their respect for him beyond his skateboarding skills.

Join Jenkem as they discover old monuments, explore makeshift DIY skate spots, encounter local breakdancers, and uncover other unique aspects of Latvia.

Discovering Latvia Through Longboarding

The journey with Madars wasn’t just about documenting skateboarding; it was an immersive experience into Latvian culture and history. The Jenkem team, initially unfamiliar with the country, quickly realized Latvia’s unique charm. This exploration was led by Madars, who acted not just as a skateboarder, but as a cultural ambassador, revealing the hidden gems of his homeland.

They visited various locations, from historical sites to quirky, handmade skate spots. This mix provided a comprehensive view of Latvia, combining its past with its current, creative spirit. The abandoned DIY spots, in particular, showed the resourcefulness of the local skateboarding community.

Madars Apse: Beyond the Board

Madars’ story goes beyond his impressive skateboarding abilities. It’s a narrative of personal growth and determination, deeply rooted in his Latvian heritage. His journey from a small country to international recognition in skateboarding is inspiring. His ability to communicate in multiple languages and connect with people from various backgrounds further underscores his unique personality.

During the week, the Jenkem crew met his family, gaining more insight into the support system that helped Madars achieve his goals. This personal connection made the experience more profound, highlighting the human element behind the skateboarding talent. The local Latvians they spoke with also provided a look into the region’s complex history, adding another layer to the story.

A Unique Perspective on Skateboarding

The trip to Latvia offered Jenkem a fresh perspective on skateboarding. It’s not just about tricks and competition, but also about the community, culture, and personal stories that shape the sport. Madars embodies this broader view, using skateboarding as a way to connect with others and share his unique perspective on life.

The collaboration with Madars demonstrated how skateboarding can be a bridge between different cultures. His journey inspires not just aspiring longboarders, but also anyone who appreciates the power of perseverance and passion.

Conclusion

The Jenkem team’s trip to Latvia with Madars Apse was more than a skateboarding expedition; it was a cultural immersion. They explored the country’s hidden corners, uncovered unique skateboarding spots, and heard stories of determination and perseverance. Madars’ journey, interwoven with the history and culture of Latvia, provided a deeper understanding of what skateboarding can represent. This experience showcased the importance of community, culture, and the human spirit in the world of longboarding. It’s a reminder that every ride tells a story, and Madars’ story is one that deserves to be shared.
