Behind the Lens: Unseen Moments in the Skateboarding World

Ever find yourself staring at a photo, completely clueless about the story behind it? Well, that’s exactly what I’ve been tasked with this week. As the new addition to the team, I’m diving headfirst into the world of skateboarding, crafting captions for photos that I had no part in creating. So, buckle up as we explore these moments together, offering a glimpse into the lives of skaters and the culture that surrounds them.

Kelly Hart seemingly asleep at a partyKelly Hart seemingly asleep at a party

Is Kelly Hart still on the milk train with the Nine Club? Or perhaps he just needed a power nap after a long day of filming? Either way, it’s amusing to see him catching some Z’s in the midst of what appears to be a lively gathering. Maybe he pulled the classic “fake sleep” move, hoping to get everyone to leave him in peace. A timeless trick, indeed.

That’s not an In-N-Out employee, it’s our very own Thomas! Looks like he’s handling a sizable shipment of Dwindle wood. Considering recent Dwindle drama, we decided to cut our losses and accept payment in skateboards instead of waiting on that check. Now, we’re sitting on 400+ blank decks and we’re looking for ideas on what to do with them. Send your suggestions to [email protected]!

Admittedly, I’m not entirely sure who this is. What I do know is that he has a sleek wooden desk, an ergonomic office chair, and a rather unimpressed expression while looking at those HUF dunks. The “Down with New York” vibe suggests he has some strong opinions. Maybe it’s time for me to get acquainted with this mysterious figure.

Christian Maalouf holding a Blade Liger modelChristian Maalouf holding a Blade Liger model

Is that a Blade Liger? If so, Napoleon Dynamite would be stoked! Christian Maalouf seems pretty excited to hold this coveted model. This particular Blade Liger is a high-end, 1/72 scale model, highly prized by collectors. It’s great to see that Christian is comfortable embracing his inner nerd, as highlighted in his Secret Hobbies feature.

Jamie Thomas in front of the Leap of Faith is a legendary sight. It’s like seeing George Washington at Mount Rushmore, or something along those lines. To learn more about the legendary Leap of Faith and its history, especially the mutton chops, check this out.

Grant Brittain taking a photoGrant Brittain taking a photo

To the casual observer, it’s just an old guy enjoying a sunny day. But to us, it’s Grant Brittain, a skateboarding pioneer. Grant Brittain has been capturing skateboarding through his lens for ages. We caught up with him in California to discuss the Leap of Faith, given his legendary photo of the event.

Kevin White with a handful of crawdadsKevin White with a handful of crawdads

Kevin White is diving headfirst into a pile of crawdads, a bold move but fitting for his character. The dude is 6′ 9″, so he probably needs all that sustenance. It’s great to see him enjoying himself at Mardi Gras, far away from the clutches of Illegal Civ, I’d say.

Alexis and Larry with a birthday cakeAlexis and Larry with a birthday cake

Don’t you just hate when servers at restaurants sing “Happy Birthday”? The song is awful, and being forced to pretend you enjoy it makes it even worse. The only redeeming factor is the free dessert you get afterward. Here’s a shot of Alexis and Larry hard at work at HQ, celebrating a birthday with cake.

Two people at a table with foodTwo people at a table with food

These two might appear like regular folks, but they have some of the sickest Instagram handles out there. A solid handle is crucial these days; if your handle is just your name and not a clever phrase or joke, you’re missing out. These two, @instasteak and @notcheetos, are definitely at the top of their social media game.

Sean Malto and Blake CarpenterSean Malto and Blake Carpenter

It’s always great to see that Sean Malto is still looking as young as ever, practically unchanged since Pretty Sweet. And speaking of Girl, what’s up with Blake Carpenter’s hoodie? Internet sleuths are probably curious to know where he’s headed after leaving Toy Machine. Maybe he’s going to spend some time on the Crail couch.

Some things are best left unsaid. We’ll just let this one speak for itself.

A group of people cropped at the waistA group of people cropped at the waist

This photo has been intentionally cropped from the waist up. Why, you ask? Well, it pains me to say that everyone in this picture is wearing rollerblades. We couldn’t bear to show our leader, Ian, in such a state, so we cropped the image to protect the innocent.

So there you have it, a peek behind the scenes of the skateboarding world. From naps and skateboards to crawdads and questionable fashion choices, it’s a culture full of interesting moments.
