Shop Talk: Unfiltered Skateboarding Opinions at the Vans Block Party

If you’ve ever spent time on a skate shop couch or park bench, you’re familiar with “shop talk”—those crucial conversations about gear, videos, and the good-natured trash talk that fuels the skateboarding world. These daily debates are what keep the community alive and kicking. That’s why we’ve brought back “Shop Talk,” a series where we gather opinions and hot takes from the local skateboarding scene.

This time, we’re diving into the action at the Vans Block Party in Brooklyn, NY. Amidst the cash-for-tricks chaos, bumping DJs, and open bar, we set up our own little shop to ask some pressing questions. Who would you vote for in the 2024 presidential election if you could write in a skateboarder? What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve searched for online? And who gets your vote for Skater of the Year (SOTY)?

The Vans Block Party provided the perfect backdrop for some unfiltered skateboarding opinions. The energy was high, the skating was impressive, and the atmosphere was ripe for some passionate discussions. We aimed to capture the raw, authentic voices within the skateboarding community.

Presidential Picks and Embarrassing Searches

We posed a couple of lighthearted yet revealing questions. The first, about which skater would get a write-in vote for president, sparked some fun and creative answers. It was interesting to see who the community respects and admires, even if it’s in a non-political context.
